Marmaris derives its name from a comment made by Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent on

a visit to the area. Rather unfairly, when he saw the town, then known as Physkos, he

uttered the words "mimara as", meaning "hang the architect". Much has changed since

then - once a sleeply fishing village Marmaris is now the starting point for most gulet

cruises around the Mediterranean and is a very established and well laid out resort which

now boasts a wide range of facilites whilst retaining its traditional seafaring heritage.

The "in place" for the yacht crowd, it has one of Turkey's major yacht ports and the

modern Netsel Marina which houses sophisticated shops and excellent restaurants.

Visit the delightful harbour with its 14th Centry Ottoman Castle which overlooks the

labyrinth of streets in the old town and the glourious coastline surrounded by pine clad

mountains.

Marmaris has a superb selection of cafes, bars and restaurants to suit every person and

every pocket and there is a "shopaholics" paradise in the second largest Bazaar to

Istanbul. It is, therefore, an ideal place to start or end your gulet cruise.
